Thomas Jefferson was a believer and proponent of free speech. In fact, he insisted that if he was forced to choose between a government without newspapers or newspapers without government, he would readily opt for the latter. But during his later career he became so angry with the newspapers that he said the papers should be divided into four categories: (1) Truth, (2) Probability, (3) Possibility, and (4) Lies.
